What Are You Doing to Surprise Your Customers

A little over a week ago, I spent five days with a group of people at the home of one of the top internet marketers in our nation, Tom Antion. Getting to spend five days with someone who’s one of the best at what they do, is a pretty cool experience. And Tom does a lot of things right, like picking people up at the airport in a limo—as well as delivering great content.

But I expected all of those things.What I didn’t expect was something that happened our second day there. Ahead of time, Tom had instructed those of who would be attending his retreat to write a script for a short one to two minute video that we could use either on our home page to welcome people to our website or as a video on an opt-in page for a product.

However, when day two arrived we found out that the person who would be video taping us that morning was …  a well-known Hollywood producer, Craig Sexton. If you’re one of those skeptical people like me, you can check out the video montage of some of the stars he’s worked with (you name them, he’s worked with them), on his website, www.sextonfilm.com.

But I have to say that having Craig do the video shoot was a WOW! Craig was wonderful. He was gracious and encouraging. He was a hoot regaling us with stories. And he was great as a video and lighting instructor. Our time with him went until almost 1:00 a.m. and we weren’t tired. It was a blast and one of the highlights of my time at Tom’s. It was a surprise! And that’s what made it so memorable.

So, as you look at your customers, what are you doing to WOW them? What are you doing to surprise them? If you’re like most owners and CEOs you’re probably thinking, “Not much!” Well, if that’s the case, here are three questions you can ask yourself to get started on coming up with a better answer.

1. What are the standard expectations our customers have of us?

2. What are some of the things other vendors in other markets have done that have WOWed me?

3. What could we add or do that would take our customer’s breathe away and cause them to say, “That was incredible!”? Or, “I never saw that coming!”?

At the end of the day, if you and I want to create raving fans, we’ve got to continually exceed people’s expectations of us. So, what can you do this week or this month that would surprise your customers?
